Mike Noto: Ring Model

^ This model is updated to 3D print. The gem has been removed so that I can attempt to inlay a real piece of soapstone into the physical model.

This was my first attempt at printing the ring. I would like to go back and scale up the ring slightly and reprint it in wax with a much higher level of detail compared to the ABS plastic.

I'm having an issue with this raised section (the part that is Turquoise in the render) I would like to offset the top surface inward so I could make the gem inlaid. I Tried offsetsrf, scale, scale3d, and a few other commands but nothing is working for me. I'm really unsure how to go about it since it curves on all 3 planes.

I also cannot fillet the wood portions (reference render) or even booleon union them to adjacent surfaces. I believe that if it is left as it is, the ring will not print.

I could not make the render 17 x 11, instead it is 17 x  9.56 at 150 DPI. It seems the proportions are
constrained and I cannot find a setting to change it.

I also think I'm doing something wrong with the Make2D command, there are a few lines missing.

  1. project a curve onto the surface. use offset curve on surface to create the inset curve surface.
split the surface with the outer curve.
    move the inner curve down.
    loft to the top curve.
use a patch surface to close off the hole made from the inner curve.

  2. you can also duplicate your inlay shape.
scale it down and boolean difference it into the original shape.
