Emily O'Brien: Chair

   To design my chair I thought of the classic bar stool chair, with a few modifications. I added a slight slant to the seat of the chair so your legs can hang with comfort and getting on and off the chair fast is easier. As for the middle I played with points and lines in Rhino and after crossing several lines over and over I came up with the star-like shape for the seat.
   I used the polyline to create the general shape of the Bar Stool and added piping to the entirety of it. at the bottom I used the Extract Isocurve tool along with split to cut the harsh edges off of my piping and then used the Blend Surface tool to create nice and smooth curves for the base of the chair.  For the top harsh curves, at first, I did the same as I did to the base, but I found it needed a little pazazz so I added the spheres for a decorative look.
   The materials are mainly Anodized Rough metals in silver, blue and black. The curved base of the chair is in an old cast iron material.

   For my camera I was inspired by the old, shake it Polaroid cameras. I took the old box shape and added several curves and bumps so that the camera appears more sleek, The matte black coloring adds a bit of edge to the sleek look. I also added a touch of modern to the Old Fashion by adding a screen to view the image rather than looking into the camera.
   To create this shape I started with its original shape of an extruded a square. Then I trimmed out some of the surfaces and added Blended and Network Surfaces to create the curved surfaces. In the front the lens was created with three extruded circles. The area where the picture is ejected from was created using an extruded rectangle that went partially into the camera, then using Boolean Difference I cut out the shape I wanted. For the buttons I used my knowledge from the mouse project and added a 3D object to my camera, Boolean Differenced the object but did not delete it so that a casing was made for the button. I then added fillets to get rid of my rough edges.
   For materials I used all hard, matte plastics in black, teal and green. For the lens I added a glass piece that is hard to see due to the black matte plastic on the rest of the camera. The flash has an emissive light on it. For the image screen I added an opaque texture onto a white, hard plastic.

Emily O'Brien: Week 4 Detergent

The Shake It was inspired by Replenish Spray Bottles. The unique design places the soap/detergent in the bottom cap only, while he rest of the bottle is filled with water. The hourglass shape allows the user to gently press in and then let go - this motion releases a small amount of soap/detergent into the bottle. The hourglass shape, again, allows the user to easily "shake it" up and down to mix the water and detergent. The removable cap design helps reduce plastic pollution because instead of throwing away the entire old spray bottle and buying a new one, the user only needs to remove and buy the bottom cap every time.

To make this lovely shape, I used the tool Sweep2 to create the surface. Then, using projected curves I split the surface and used Sweep2 again to create the divets running across the bottle. For the screw cap, I watched the tutorials provided and used the helix tool for the threads, along with Sweep1 to create the pipe-like look to it. To create the indent of the thread I used the Boolean Difference tool.

For the product, I wanted the inside to be visible to show off the bottom screw cap. For the overall bottle I used a clear white plastic and for the screw I used a darker clear plastic. Adding color to the bottle using the bottom and top caps I chose cloudy colored plastics.

Mickey Mouse - Emily O'Brien: Week 3

For this project I wanted to make my mouse child friendly. Kids these days can pick up on technology faster than most generation, I chose Mickey Mouse because almost all kids I know love Mickey and Minnie. 
I used the cylinder and Boolean Difference tools to create the mouse ears. I added game controllers to the ears because most of the time when kids are using the computer its for games, this gives them an additional controller to play rather than just a mouse.  For the eyes I projected an oval onto the mouse itself, used the pipe tool to create an indent and then added an extruded curve. The left and right eyes are the left and right click buttons. For the nose I took a solid oval object and the Boolean Difference tool to place it in the mouse. In the middle of the mouses' nose I added a scroll key. I used the solid cylinder object for the general shape, then used the array polar tool with 11 extruded rectangles to create the notches in the scroll. I added the smile for detail by using a polyline curve and the pipe tool
For the materials in this Mickey Mouse, I used a variety of clear and cloudy plastics in black, white and shades of black. I chose plastic because it gets dirty less (from kids fingerprints) and most kids toys are in a plastic material due to the fact that they are inexpensive to replace if broken and are fun for kids to play with.
