Emily O'Brien: Chair

   To design my chair I thought of the classic bar stool chair, with a few modifications. I added a slight slant to the seat of the chair so your legs can hang with comfort and getting on and off the chair fast is easier. As for the middle I played with points and lines in Rhino and after crossing several lines over and over I came up with the star-like shape for the seat.
   I used the polyline to create the general shape of the Bar Stool and added piping to the entirety of it. at the bottom I used the Extract Isocurve tool along with split to cut the harsh edges off of my piping and then used the Blend Surface tool to create nice and smooth curves for the base of the chair.  For the top harsh curves, at first, I did the same as I did to the base, but I found it needed a little pazazz so I added the spheres for a decorative look.
   The materials are mainly Anodized Rough metals in silver, blue and black. The curved base of the chair is in an old cast iron material.

   For my camera I was inspired by the old, shake it Polaroid cameras. I took the old box shape and added several curves and bumps so that the camera appears more sleek, The matte black coloring adds a bit of edge to the sleek look. I also added a touch of modern to the Old Fashion by adding a screen to view the image rather than looking into the camera.
   To create this shape I started with its original shape of an extruded a square. Then I trimmed out some of the surfaces and added Blended and Network Surfaces to create the curved surfaces. In the front the lens was created with three extruded circles. The area where the picture is ejected from was created using an extruded rectangle that went partially into the camera, then using Boolean Difference I cut out the shape I wanted. For the buttons I used my knowledge from the mouse project and added a 3D object to my camera, Boolean Differenced the object but did not delete it so that a casing was made for the button. I then added fillets to get rid of my rough edges.
   For materials I used all hard, matte plastics in black, teal and green. For the lens I added a glass piece that is hard to see due to the black matte plastic on the rest of the camera. The flash has an emissive light on it. For the image screen I added an opaque texture onto a white, hard plastic.

Billy Nisbet: Week 5 Ring





My inspiration for the Hexaring was the honeycomb shape. I experimented with several different forms to incorporate the shape, and decided upon the chain resting halfway in the surface of a traditional ring. I designed this ring to be unisex, it can be customized through material choices.

To create this final design i used sweep 1 to create the traditional ring shape.  By working out the total circumference, I calculated the appropriate sized hexagon to form a seamless loop around. I piped and filleted to get my final shape refined.

Materiality in the two rings consists of an inner ring of ceramic, and the hexagonal ring composed of precious metals. The precious metals shown are platinum on top, gold on bottom.

Billy Nisbet: Week 5 Sunglasses






 The inspiration for the RAY-RAY'S sunglasses was to emit more "rays" around the edges of the frame. By changing proportions of the frame and changing its materiality, I was seeking to make ray-ban-like sunglasses that could emit more light around the edge of the frame, making it both visually lighter, and lighter in weight.

The processes i used most to produce these forms were control point curves to clean up my orthographic drawings. Control points on was helpful in refining such lines. Curve from 2 views is a very powerful tool and was very helpful in creating the frame. For the lenses I created a large sphere and placed it at the correct angle to be a lens, I then split the sphere by the frame and deleted the extraneous surfaces. Boolean processes and filleting were used to clean up final shapes.

For materials I used a dark plastic for the sunglasses arms, and a grey-shaded front-frame. The lighter frame on the front is meant to emit a little more light than a traditional pair, so a beautiful day does not just appear overcast while wearing them.

I designed these sunglasses with my youngest nephew in mind. I wanted to deviate from making them too girly. I came up with the brand name because they favor crickets.

After importing my sketches into Rhino, I drew curves onto them. I, then, did a series of extrusions, blends, sweep 2s, and lofts to achieve the completed look. Boolean union was my final step to seal the frames together.

These sunglasses are intended to be completely customizable.The materials that I used ranged from wooden to plastic, or even gemstone frames. The lens are all plastic. Your preppy Boy Scout will love these sunglasses!

Reed Herne: Week 4 Detergent Bottle






In designing this project my goal was to create a slightly refined design that did not stray far from the typical consumer detergent bottle that might be found on the shelf at a store. I extended the bottle with an extra chamber extruding from the top and an elongated tip for facilitate pouring. The cap has ridged along the sides allowing grip so that the cap can be easily twisted off if too tight. 

For the basic shape of the bottle I used a sweep 2 command and planar curves for the ends. To create the depression on the bottom surface of the bottle I used the split, scale and loft tools. For the handle I used primarily the extrude curve and fillet tools. Along with the fillet tool I also used the create pipe command to create smooth transitions between surfaces. As for the cap and tip I used the helix, sweep 1 and boolean union commands. To give my bottle structure I used the offset surface command; creating the walls of the form. I found that the DIR (direction) command was practical when troubleshooting boolean operations. 

My material choices were typical much like the shape of my bottle. I chose plastics for cost efficiency since detergent bottles are mass produced, and the colors of the Tide brand bottle because it is easier for the consumer to identify a product they are already familiar with. The transparent cap allows for easier analysis when grading.

Ellen Siu - Week 3 - Flashlight Project

    For this project, I just tried to modeling a general flash light under the guideline as well as bring into being professional based on its function, there have no concept actually.


     I learned lots of techniques in this week two project. I used Insert Edit Point to add points on a curve while I remodeled points in Sections. I used Array Polar to rotate and repeated the shape that I create for the topmost part then used Boolean2Objects to define the body as I want. Curve Boolean also an amazing command that helps a lots when I made the model’s body in Sections.


    Unfortunately, it’s too late when I discovered that the KeyShot installed in my PC is a low version, there are not many choice I can choose. In the end I chose Blue and orange to be the main color.

Joel Salomonsson: Week 1 Castle

My inspiration came from the Hagia Maria Cathedral and the Oxford campus in England. I have a lot of experience with AutoCAD and 3dsMax so i did not struggle as much as i thought i would in the building techniques, however I struggled a lot in the design of the castle since architecture is not my strong side. I used a lot of curves and both CurveBoolean and BooleanDifference making this castle. I tried to keep everything as simple as possible by using simple shapes such as rectangles and circles and work further from those objects. In fact most of the castle is built by using rectangles and circles in different ways. I used ExtrudeCrv for almost every single object and I also used arrays, scale and copy.
