Sarah Brodsky Christian Edwards Week 10: Kite

For our kite design concept we wanted to create something that honored a cat named Frank. During this initial concept contemplation we decided that a tail would be appropriate to balance the kite in flight. Additionally we double taped the outline of the kite to make it sturdy and this did not effect the performance of our kite as we had anxiously anticipated.

In creating the kite we first folded our plastic tablecloth and measured out our measurements and cut the kite accordingly into an isosceles triangle. Next we arranged our wooden dowels and outlined the kite with two layers of duct tape for extra support. Then we attached the smaller cut isosceles triangle in the middle. After that the grommets were added. Then it was the fun part where we got to paint Frank's lovely face.

To create this kite we gathered plastic tablecloth, rubber cement, duct tape and a line to hold the kite. These materials were great because they were lightweight In addition to these materials we used paint to create a cat face honoring the great cat Frank. Grommets were also used to attach the kite to the string used to have the kite in flight.

My concept was to design a small and attractive camera. I created a unique shape, added classic round buttons and a shortened lens cap. This camera is designed to be easy to use, sleek and sturdy. This camera is aimed at any consumer looking for an easy to use, reliable camera. The screen is nice and large to see what is being shot. The eye-hole has been removed for a more modern feel. 

To create this design I made a rectangle. Then I used the extrude command to create a thickness for the rectangular body. Next I filleted the edges to my liking to create a sleek and curvaceous look. After this I created the lens which was made using the truncated cone. Then I created a cylinder to fit inside the lens, used the BooleanDifference command to remove the inside and then created another cylinder to fit within the space and act as the camera lens. Next I created by making tiny cylinders and placed and attached them accordingly. I then created another rectangle and extruded it only slightly to create the screen for the back of the camera. I then used keyshot to find appropriate materials that would be both attractive and efficient for this design.

I chose to use copper materials because I think copper can be rather attractive and I would like to recognize that. I then chose to use a yellow plastic for the buttons and two kinds of copper to create a variety in color. These materials are sturdy, can be recycled by pennies and sleek for my design.

Sarah Brodsky Week9: Chairs

The concept for these chair designs was to provide a comfortable back support to the consumer. The second design also has a desk space that includes a box that has outlets for charging purposes. These chair designs provide the user with a spacious and comfortable space. The desk space has different layers to provide for an optimum level of organization. These qualities are important for a travelling consumer. There back and neck are tired and there technology is dying. My design will create a comfortable and relaxing space.
To create the first design I created a curve using the curve planar line. Then I used the pipe command to create a thickness for the line I had drawn. I then used the ArrayLinear command to set the pipes side by side in an attractive manner. Next I copied and rotated each piece so that it fit in a square manner. I then created a circle to fit in the middle of the back facing chairs. I then used the Pipe command to again create a thickness for the chairs. For the other design I created a shape using the curve planar line tool. Then I extruded the shape and used the cap planar holes command to seal the shape. I then used the cylinder tool to create the two disk like desks on either side of the main desk area. To create the main desk area I used the rectangle tool. To make the edges softer I used the fillet command. 
For my first design I decided to only use copper. I felt that this was an attractive and recyclable material. It would be cheap and could be built by melting down pennies which are soon to probably leave US currency. For my other design I chose to use a blue plastic material for the seat which could be easily made of recycled water bottles or other plastic packaging material like plastic bags. I then chose to use a steel for the desk because it will be easy to clean and it will be shiny and attractive.

Sarah Brodsky Week 8:Lamp

The concept for this design was to create a lamp design that was modern and simple. This design is intended to create an organized feel within the consumer. This design is also intended to be a simple design so it can properly complement any room. This design is functional, cool and easy to assemble.

To create this design a number of commands were used. First I tried creating a shape and revolving it to use the section and contour commands. This unfortunately gave me much difficulty so I resorted to the good ol ArrayPolar command. I first created the shape for the panel and then used the ArrayPolar command. I also used the tube shape to create the disk like shapes in between the panels. To create the drawings I used the Make2D command and I created the light in Keyshot through using a cylinder shape. 

The materials chosen for this design are wood and glass. I feel these are classic and homey materials that can complement most things. I was inspired by Chinese lanterns when designing this product.

Sarah Brodsky Water and Air Pinky Ring: Week 6

The concept of this ring is to meet the wants the glamorous consumer who is a lover of the earth at heart. This ring is made of elegant glass and sapphire materials. I wanted to create something that looked modern and rounded. I wanted it to be subtle yet a striking complement to any outfit worn with the ring. 
To create this ring I designed my own curve by using the control point curve. I then revolved my design to create a ring shape. Then I created another curve using the radius tool. Then I piped this curve and used BooleanDifference to create the indent. To make the gem shape I manipulated the surface from an ellipsoid using the f10 command. 
I chose to use a clear glass and sapphire for style and serenity. Glass is a very silent and calming material that I felt complemented the design for this ring. I chose to use Sapphire because it is a very beautiful stone. This modern and elegant ring is very flattering and this piece would make a lovely addition to any fingers.

Sarah Brodsky Week 5: The Star Sunglasses

The concept of this design is to have available a fun and flattering pair of sunglasses. These are fashionable glasses that give away to the unattractive middle bar in between your nose. These glasses are secure to your face and can even boast as an effective sport sunglass. I wanted to design something attractive and classic looking.

I traced my object after using the PictureFrame command. To trace I used tools like the control point curve and then used sweep2 to create the wrap around headpiece. To create the glass part I extruded the traced shape of the star from my sketch. Then I used the cap planar hole command to create a surface for the glass. I then copied the made star to create an identical shape. I placed the pieces together and joined them to create a solid form from my design.

The Materials I chose to use are a purple tinted glass and a carved bronze. The bronze makes the sunglasses appear to be expensive looking however are made of brass which makes this an affordable product. This piece was made for the thrifty and stylish fashionista.

Sarah Brodsky Week 4: Detergent Bottle

My detergent bottle has been designed to hold a great amount of laundry detergent. I also wanted my detergent bottle to be easy to pour and fit the users hand comfortably. This design was intended to look modern and complement any laundry room.

I used many modeling techniques while designing this project. I was very surprised to see my increased problem solving ability as well as my own memory and knowledge of rhino techniques to be used in the making of this design. For starters I used the circle, center, radius tool to create the base of the design then I created my own two lines using the control point curve. I then used the loft command to create the body. Next I used the control point curve again to create what would soon be the curvy indent within my design. Once I was satisfied with the shape created through the control point curve I used the split command and deleted what remained in between these two lines. Then I used the Sweep2 command to connect these two curve in an indented and attractive manner. Next I used the control point once again to create a shape for the handle. Then I extruded the handle, added cap planer holes and then used the BooleanDifference command to create the hole for the handle. To create the cap and spout I first created a cylinder and then went to the curve menu where I selected the helix option. Next I fit the helix to the cylinder and then used the 1D scale to space out the helix. Then I used the Pipe command to create a body for the helix. Next I created a larger cylinder to fit overtop and then used the BooleanDifference command to create a compatible cap for the spout. Then I carefully attached the spout to the detergent bottle body.

I chose to use a clear plastic so the user could see how much liquid is in the bottle. This is useful so the consumer can refill accordingly. I made used a clear plastic on the cap so Professor Scott could see that I properly created the indents in the cap so it is compatible to the spout. I used a rubber material for the grip of the bottle so the user can easily grip the bottle.

Sarah Brodsky: Week 3 Mouse

The mouse I have designed is to be intended for the use of a child. This concept has been inspired by my own use of the classic Logitech trackball mouse as a child. I wanted to design a smaller and more modern version of the mouse I have used. I have designed it simply to fit the use of most children's computer games. 

I have used several modelling techniques in the making of this mouse and I was surprised to find how simple they can be to use. To create the body of the mouse I created a curve which I then duplicated and rotated to either side, then I used the loft command to create the physical body. To create the trackball's relationship to the body of the mouse I used the BooleanDifference command. I also used this command when adding each of the two buttons to the mouse base. To create the buttons I extruded each of the shapes I had made by the control point curve. Then I used the planar cap holes command to create a surface for each of the buttons.

I chose to use a clear plastic inspired by the first clear plastic nintendo64 controller that I also used as a child. I felt that this material complimented my inspiration and concept. I intended for this mouse to be reminiscent of what I have thought to be classic designs in the technological world. I chose orange as it is a complimentary color of orange. I also thought the orange trackball was playful in that with it's rough texture it resembles the orange fruit. This mouse is meant to be fun and easy to use for children.

Sarah Brodsky: Week 2 Flashlight

My flashlight has been designed to be sustainable and efficient for the rugged and outdoor consumer. I wanted to create something that had a natural look yet still obtained features which allow it to stand out from nature so that it is not easily lost. The overall shape of the flashlight has been designed to be protective of the inner workings of the flashlight so if dropped the flashlight will still remain in tact. 

My flashlight is made of one solid piece so it is not easily disassembled therefore does not fall apart easily. I added toruses within the rhino software to create a grip for the flashlight. I believe my flashlight to be modeled in a way that supports it effectively because the middle of the flashlight has a double support and when lying down is supported on either side by the thicker parts of the material. This middle part which is smaller than the remainder of the flashlight is ergonomic to the user's hand and allows a comfortable grip. 

I chose to use a Cast Iron material for the whole of my flashlight. I chose this material because it can withstand extreme temperatures. This is important because an outdoorsy consumer may near a fire or undergo extreme temperatures. This material protects the inside while also maintaining a cool feel and avoids burning the consumer. The middle piece is made of rubber. I chose to use rubber because it is a material which is easily gripped by the skin and will prevent the flashlight from sliding out of the user's hands. Also the rubber adds an additional cooling effect to the overall temperature of the flashlight as well as provides additional protection. I believe my flashlight to be thoughtful with its' materials, modeling technique and concept.

Sarah Brodsky: Week 1 Castle

My castle was originally influenced by Greek Columned Temples. This is shown through the cylinders which support each level of the floating figure. Mushrooms became a quick focus when using the ArrayPolar command. When using this command the influence of mushrooms became very apparent.

Modeling techniques used within this piece include 3-D joining and the Array Polar command. Shapes used within the piece include paraboloids, cylinders, ellipsoids and toruses. To create the stairs I individually stacked ellipsoids on top of one another to create a staircase.Further, I made several levels and created stairs to create ease for pedestrians traveling among the heavenly structure. 

My castle is made of marble. I chose to use this material because it is traditional to Greek Columned Temples. Marble is also a sturdy and attractive material that I believe complements the idea of this heavenly castle.
