For this project I wanted to make a ring that I eventually print in silver with Shapeways.  I plan on making it a mother's day gift for my mom.  The tanzanite in the center I bought a few weeks ago and I have also bought the 1mm accent diamonds.  When I do get to printing this in silver I will set those stones in the halo and basket setting.

I used a lot of solid building and filleting to get the finished product.  I also use project to extrude and trim the cutouts before I filleted them.  That is where my issues came in.  When I filleted the edges of the cutouts, I did not notice at first that there was a surface issue, so I could not fix it right away.  When I later noticed them and tried to go back to remove them, all methods I tried failed.  I plan on remodeling the top portion, as I have saved an earlier iteration of the model.  The stones I did not model myself, I had a friend in the CAD class for jewelry give me the prebuilt stone file her professor provided them, since the important portion of my model is the setting for the stone.  I needed to be as accurate as I could.

The material is sterling silver, since that is what I plan on printing it in this material eventually.  I like the look of silver, since it is a warmer looking metal than platinum or white gold.  The tanzanite resembles the one I have as closely as I could get it.  The diamonds are also almost exactly the way they look in real life.  I played with the material settings to achieve this, and I love the way the model turned out.

When I started this project, my intention was to create something that have mystic symbols. So, my inspiration for the Sannyasa Ring was a symbol called Sannyasa, which means the life stage of the renouncer within the Hindu scheme of four age-based life stages known as ashrams. In other words, the Sannyasa is a transition between the material world and the spiritual freedom.

Using this idea, I applied the command Crv2View in two joined curves of that symbol with a circular curve to create the shape of the ring. Moreover, I used commands such as project to create the details in each side  and boolean difference, fillet edge, and blendSrf.

For materials I chose two types of steel for the body and the details and a shiny clear plastic to recreate the precious stone. To render in passes I used the diffuse, reflection, and toon arrangements to make it look real and highlight the details.

It got just a little bit too small, so some of the details could not appear as good as it should be.

Blake Stephenson: Week 6 Ring




   The ring that I designed was inspired by my love of the water and my love of fishing.  I put on there a slogan that really drives me as well as many other to fish as hard as you can.  There are also two boats and two sets of over lapping fish hooks on the ring.

     I mainly built my ring in 2D by using the extract surface and UV Curves to get a flat surface from the face of the ring to work on.  I also made lots of curves and used mirrors, copy, move, scale and a few others.  I used the Text Object function to create the 3D lettering on the ring and I used ExtrudeCRV to extrude the boats and the hooks.  The bars on the back are simply rectangles that I alt-tapped to create an exact copy of the first one.

     I rendered these views with a few passes.  I used a diffuse pass, an occlusion pass, and specular pass and then a pass that really brought out the reflections on the ring.  The materials that I used were for the ring itself black chrome.  Then for the lettering and bars on the back I chose a 24K Matte Gold to give it a different look from almost anything else that is available in terms of jewelry today.  For the boats and hooks I used a hard gray plastic because I wanted to differentiate between them and the ring but also not give it to much of a pop.

Reed Herne: Week 6 Varsity Ring




 Inspired by the game of lacrosse given to us by the creator, the varsity ring can serve as a trophy, award or accessory. This piece of memorabilia can be customized to your team colors for personalization. Simple yet elegant the Varsity ring is a wearable reminder of wearer's experiences with their team playing the great sport.

In modeling the head of the stick I used the draw curve command as well as sweep1. For the shaft of the stick I used the helix command to create the initial curve, then a sweep1 command to create the shape. The butt of the stick was modeled using the tapered cylinder and the cylinder commands. To refine my model I used the boolean union and fillet command, creating one unified model and softening edges. 

The passes I used for my first keyshot image are as follows: flat colors, ambient occlusion, reflection and wireframe (with layer mask). For my second image I used the same passes with the exception of the wierframe pass which I replaced with a transparency mask (xray). To create my ambient occlusion pass I painted the ring white, set the material to diffuse and removed ground reflections and shadows. In Rhino I used the make2d command to create isometric and orthographic views of my design. After cleaning up my views in rhino I exported the line drawings to illustrator and from there I pasted them to my photoshop file.

Crysta Polvinale: Week 6: Ring





 This ring design was inspired by the balance of night and day. The suspension of the two settings on a delicate helix represents celestial bodies of two opposing forces that function in sync, but never seem to meet. I also like the idea of a ring that doesn't fully close around the finger which is why I used the helix.
My workflow in Rhino consisted of using a 2 turn helix curve for the band, followed by a round cap pipe. For the teardrop turquoise, I created a curve and revolved it. For the setting I used curve to round cap pipe and the array polar.
In Keyshot, I chose the turquoise stone to for a natural focal point inside the simple silver armature. I took several layers into photoshop and varied their effects on each other. For the reflection, I focused on combining warm colors from keyshot to contrast with the cool silver and blue.

Christian McKenzie - Week 6: Ring Model



Many of my friends back home in Detroit are into a Funk Style dance called popping. They really like things that represent or allude to the dance style. As this is a style that get's little publicity compared to other hip hop related arts it is rare that something is made specifically to their preference in dance without with out the inclusion of another style, such as b-boying.
I wanted to make a product for my friends, the people who inspire me and I love to watch and draw.
I chose a simple chrome material for my ring. I feel that additional materials might take away from the over all design. I also wanted a more sophisticated and designed appearance as this appeals to the group I am orienting it.



I built a basic shell of the shape I wanted using network surface. I looked up the for a size 7.5 ring and drew a curve to represent the interior of the ring. I then drew 3 curves 2 mm from the interior as reference using the quad snap. I used these reference curves and the end snap a points for arcs. i drew two straight curves from the end of each of my lateral arc curves. I used the tangent curve to make the tapered shape I wanted for the shell and outline and did a curve from 2 views. I drew interior curves through theses three curves connecting them and used the network surface to make the surface. i used rail sweep to make the lateral surfaces. I then used fillet on the edges. To hollow the ring I made a copy and scaled it 3d. I used the control points to warp the base of the ring and did a Boolean difference. I duplicated the hard edges and piped trimmed and used 2 rail sweep to remove the hard edge. 
I used the text tool and and arranged them so they intersected, I took only the negative shapes using  boolean curve. I extruded the negative shapes of the text curves and used pipe, trim, and blend surface, or sweep 2 to round where the objects would be Booleaned out of the ring. It was time consuming, with alot of trial and error, to make sure all of the corners that would be made from the Boolean difference were filleted.
I then piped and trimmed the edges of the text that the Boolean had left in the the ring. I used sweep 2 rails to remove the edges around the text.

Nick Tourville- Week 6 Ring




   The ring I designed, entitled, "Melody", functions both as a ring to be worn and as a the notes for a music box. The studs on the ring provide texture when worn and pluck the keys the in the box. Ridges on either side of the ring create a smooth surface between fingers so the wearer doesn't have to worry about discomfort from the studs. Finally, a colored curve was place through the center of the ring for accent. The wavy shape of the curve compliments the song this particular ring is meant to play, "Beyond the Sea".
    After taking some finger measurements, I began work on the modeling process. I started by making a tube, took its outer surface, and created a flat UV curve. I turned the curve into a surface and placed spheres in a particular pattern across the new surface. I then drew the curve, extruded it, and trimmed (and then capped) any part of the spheres and extruded curve below the surface. Using the Flow along Surface command, I was able to wrap my decorated surface around my tube. I create a slightly thicker tube at one end of the ring, mirrored it, and those became my ridges. After some fillet, the ring was complete.
   Seeing as this model was jewelry, I used precious metals like gold and platinum for the ring. When sapphire didn't work quite how I expected, I substituted it with blue glass for the center curve. The two Keyshot images were rendered in passes, consisting of a beauty pass, a mask pass, a diffuse pass, and a specular pass. These passes were they layered over each other in Photoshop.

UPDATE: Added images of the 3D printed ring. While it is big enough to fit on my fingers, the ring itself is smaller than I imagined it to be and the design is very faint and hard to see. Had it been a bigger ring, I think the design would have been more visible!

 For my ring design, I was inspired by the design of my favorite ring. The design features a fox head, and I wanted to create my own unique version of the ring using a wolf pup.
 In Photoshop, I drew a wolf pup head using a Cintiq computer and then brought the drawing into illustrator to image trace and rasterize it for modeling in rhino. When modeling in rhino, I used the create arc, Boolean difference, and sweep2 to create my ring body and then used hatch, extrude solid, and split for the top portion. Putting the drawing into Rhino and hatching it was my favorite part of the process!
 For Keyshot, I chose Anodized metal for the ring body, hard plastic for the wolf face and ring top, and used basic metal for the moon and spherical stars. My ring was designed not as a fancy or expensive product, but something rather to be mass produced and sold at a cheaper price, hence the plastic and metal material choices. For my lighting and rendering, I decided to render in passes which created lots of different reflections and values on the ring. I kept the metal shiner than the ring top purposefully to emphasize the difference in materials.

There is no replacement for displacement so get rid of your other jewelry and pick up a v8 inspired "Horse Power" ring. This ring was inspired by a variety of v8 engines. The intake manifold is styled from a LS1 engine made by GM which powers the corvette. I also took inspiration from late 60's engines made by Shelby. I thought it would be interesting to create the ring form by having the exhaust connect underneath the engine.

To create this ring I employed a variety of modeling techniques. To create the form I used a variety of Boolean commands to join polysurfaces. To create small details I used the wire cut command and the polar array command. To create the ring part, I piped curves that I transformed by adjusting their control points. To create the orthographic and isometric views I used the make2d command. 

The materials of this ring stay true to what real engines are made of. Aluminum is used in engines because it is light weight and dissipates heat effectively. The filter, timing belt pulleys, and intake manifold are made of black anodized aluminum. The engine block is made of regular aluminum and the exhaust is polished steel. To create the renderings, I rendered in passes. Starting with the normal rendering, then rendering a mask pass, occlusion pass, diffuse pass, specular pass, and reflection pass. I then took the multitude of renders and combined them in photoshop.
