Meghan Preiss : Week 4 : Detergent Bottle





My detergent bottle was inspired by the Jetsons television show that aired in the 1960's to the late 1980's. I wanted it to be futuristic yet have a fun appeal. I wanted it to have a deep offset surface because I believe this adds to the futuristic feel. I also created a two step top to the bottle to create a different curve to the bottle.

To create my bottle I started with simple curves and then used a sweep2 to create the shape. I created a curve and extruded it then boolean differenced for the handle. I also created two curves and trimed the inside and then sweep2 to create the offset surface. I filleted every edge. To create the cap I used helix and boolean difference.

My materials were all hard plastics. I chose to use a rough gray for the main part of the bottle.I chose to use two different colors for the main pops of color to show that this brand comes in different scents/kinds of detergent. I used hard rough red and hard rough lime green to create a fun pop of color. In addition, to extend the pop of color I used a hard shiny tangerine and a hard shiny deep cer. I am really pleased with my color choices and how my bottles turned out.

     For this week's assignment I made a detergent bottle. My design concept was mainly based off of the template. I detailed the cap a bit to make the bottle more interesting to look at as well as offset a surface to create a unique shape in the bottle design.

     I started out by using the template to create my main surface. I created a curve for the handle which I then extruded, booleandifferenced into the surface, and filleted the edges. To create the large curve across the surface, I offset an inner curve off of the template, extruded both curves, split the surface with the extrusions, and blended all naked edges. For the cap I created corkscrews by using the video tutorial and added ridges on the outer wall to add more detail to the overall design. To do this I made a very skinny and long cylinder which I arraypolared around the cap to make about 25 cylinders. Then I booleandifferenced all of them into the cap creating ridges along the edge. Each ridge is filleted as well as the top of the cap and the bottom of the bottle.

     The materials I applied are a simple hard shiny plastic. I chose the colors torquoise and gray because they were not as alarming of a color as most detergent bottles are.

       So for the assignment we had to model a detergent bottle. I decided to design a bottle for Tide company. The design might not be similar to Tide's bottles, though it's a new concept and it shouldn't. With the new design, since it's a large bottle I tried to design it the way that it's easy to hold the handle when the liquid is being poured, so that little space at the end of the handle helps you to hold the handle easily when pouring the liquid. Also to avoid enduring too much weight when pouring the liquid inside I positioned the neck and collar angular from the top surface.   

            The techniques that I used are pretty much all the same as previous projects. I used one curve on the bottom and one on the top with a cross section and used Sweep2 to make the overall shape of the bottle. Then used Project to apply my curves on to the bottle. Split to split the surface and trim them. Also used Offsetsrf to make a copy of the front shape in a smaller size. And finally Blendsrf to connect offseted parts smoothly. Extendcrv and Oriend  for the cap also. 

For the materials I pretty much used hard shiny plastic for the all parts. Just a different color. Since it's a design for Tide company I should keep the colors as they are appear in all the products. So I chose orange for the body, blue for top, handle surfaces and the cap, and yellow for the front offseted part.

Quinn Baldacci: Week 4 Detergent Bottle







For my detergent bottle I looked at the tutorial and then went with a little different design.  I got about half way through my first design when I realized it wasn't really useful.  It was too back heavy and would have been hard to pour.  So I reworked my initial rails so that with the handle and bottom cut out it would be easier to pour.  I know large detergent bottles can be very heavy when full so I used the bottom cut out to create a place to support the bottle when pouring the detergent.  Personally I like the bottles that have measuring cup/caps that can just be dropped in with laundry but I didn't think that would work well with this bottle.  Instead I used the curves from the bottle, extended them and created a cap that was more of an extension of the bottle. I added a label and hollowed out the inside.

I used sweep2 and loft quite a bit on this model.  Making the screw threads on the cap was easier because I had already done it for my flashlight.  Some of my fillets gave me trouble because of some tiny geometry that was forming.  I fixed that and only had to use pipe/split/blend on the top edge because of some edges left form fixing a previous change.  Hollowing the bottle was interesting.  I copied a smaller model inside and then stretched it a bit so it didn't cut into the handle hole.  I also removed the handle so make it easier to hollow.  The edge analysis says I have three naked edges but I can't find them!  I don't see any pink lines or dots anywhere.

In keyshot I used plastic for the body and cap and then a matte paint for the label.  I like the look of the clear plastic for the cap and it makes it easier to see where you're measuring to when pouring.  I used bright colors because those are the detergent I notice at the store.  I usually go for Tide which is the classic bright orange but I actually notice bright greens first so I used that instead.  Bright green also fits better with the scents detergents usually have.  I wanted to add lettering to the label but rhino kept crashing on me and I didn't want to push my luck.  I'll probably add it in later when I have time.

Ceci Michelena: Week 4 Detergent Bottle

For this model I created a design around the "S" curve. The front surface is a clear hard plastic and you can see the liquid inside. The liquid was created by making an offset surface after the whole outer surface of the model was completed. For the handles, the hard edge was fixed by doing the pipe, trim, blend steps. The light blue materials are a soft plastic so that it reflects less light than the rest of the bottle, and the top is made of a hard clear plastic so that the details of the twist open top could be visible in the final design.

To fix the 2 naked edges:
The naked edge on the top was fixed by deleting the bottom surface of the cap, making a unified curve out of the edge of the bottle, lofting the two, and joining everything.
The naked edge around the S curve on the offset surface outside the liquid was fixed by blending the surface with the inner edge of the offset surface and the rest of the body of the  bottle (and then joined).

During this tutorial, I adopted a trial and error technique. One set back was that I had difficulty filleting my edges after using the sweep 2. I learned as I went, and enjoyed playing with more organic shapes in the rounded bottle and lid.

 For my detergent bottle, I created a skinnier type of bottle called the "Sleek Wave" which was made to hold detergent for delicates. Instead of a bulkier and bolder bottle, I wanted to create something that would be less heavy and more calming to the mind. In Rhino, I enjoyed modeling with the blend surface technique as well as splitting and trimming to create the shape of the bottle. When modeling in Keyshot, I chose a "cool" color scheme and put hard rough plastic for the body and hard shiny plastic for the cap. Because the bottle was white, I tried to adjust the lighting where the shadow was behind the bottle to create a good sense of contrast.

The intent behind this bottle was to create something simple, slim, and easy to spot. The entire interior volume of the bottle is used, including the volume of the handle so as to maximize the fl. oz. I used smooth edges so as to make it easier for the detergent to roll of the sides of the bottle so that none is left behind. I used minimum threads on the cap in order to help control the mess created by using the cap as a measuring device.

In order to create the surface of the bottle I used a network surface as opposed to a loft in order to allow for more subtle manipulation of the exterior form. I used a combination of filleting, blending, and two rail sweeps in order to smooth out the corners as a fore mentioned. To create the interior wall and the liquid inside I offset surfaces. As for materials, I chose a clear blue plastic. I makes little to no sense why a detergent bottle wouldn't be entirely clear. I want the design to be simple and concise, and in order to achieve I determined that the user should be able to one, recognize the cap, and two know how much detergent is left in the bottle. Hence the use of a clear plastic for the bottle. For the cap I chose an opaque red plastic and increased the roughness to further distinguish it from the rest of the bottle.

Overall, my design is simple, and immediately understood by it's user without any bells and whistles.
