This design was inspired by the game gears of war (http://gearsofwar.xbox.com/en-US/AgeGate?source=%252f) from the cogs in the game. My junior year of high school i made this same design out of wax to lost wax cast it in silver, sadly the mold had bubbles and my piece exploded while casting. I wanted a kinetic piece which could be worn around the neck. This one is specifically made for my brother which is why it has mine and his initials on it.
The techniques I used were chamfering, fillet, boolean, bend, and offset, I may have used more but those were the most important. The bend tool came in handy when making the chain for my render. the chamfer tool helped create the perfect edges i wanted for the cogs. When renderpassing I only used 3 layers; I made one which had strong shadows on a white shape, one with just the normally rendered for with the right materials, and the last one with just a super shiny metal color all around to give great reflections.
I used, aluminum for the inner most and outer most cogs. Brass was used for the middle cog and the bail(part that holds the chain). The rod in the middle is steel and so are the bumpers that keep the cogs from touching. I used aluminum because it is cheaper then steal and if kept clean looks just as good.
