The Concept:
Asterias is a genus of the Asteriiadae family of sea stars. Sea stars are invertebrates that have the ability of Autotomy of one or more of their arms. They are able to survive without 75% of their bodies. This is beneficial  to the species because the family is well conserved. At the same time, the overall biology and balance of the ocean life suffers a great threat because of this adaptation skill. Some Star fishes are also able to reproduce when they loose a member of their bodies. Basically, a whole new star will grow from a lost limb. Human curiosity and predators  are the main cause of star fish amputation. But sometimes the star fish doesn't die: the main body will produce a brand new "Arm", and/or from the lost arm a whole new star grows. Today, this is one of the biggest threats in marine biology. This concept inspired me to create this design. One of the biggest elements of the composition is the chaos, that is a reflection to the situation and the future if we don't act to solve the issue. For example, the Acanthaster planci have increased in population damaging coral reefs as a result of their grazing.

Techniques:
In Rhino, I used a photograph and traced a curve. Then I transformed the curve into a surface. With my cylinder shape I extracted the surface. I multiplied the starfish surface in the new surface, and then I  Flowed that surface into the base cylinder.
In keyshot, I went for a black plastic paint. The composition is "disorganized" by nature, so one material and one color was enough.
