Avi Spratt Week 6: Ring

I wanted to make an engagement ring, mostly because I spent a lot of time looking at my brother's wife's ring, its got a huge stone. I looked at many other traditional engagement rings, all of which are very narrow. I used curves and sweeps to make the main body of the ring, then exploded and rebuilt the surfaces to manipulate the shape to create a base for the center jewel.  I wanted to focus on refraction, and the cut of the gem, and the material beneath it determines how well light reflects and refracts off of it. To create the gem, I made three hexagons of different sizes, and lofted each side, then chamfered the edges slightly.  For materials I used platinum for the majority of the ring, gold for the center band, and the small accent logo, and a darker platinum for the smaller bands. I used emerald for the gems. I rendered in passes for one picture and rendered in layers for the other.  I ran in to a bit of trouble though, I must have had a bad fillet somewhere because I had a single naked edge on one side. I split and mirrored the side that didn't have the naked edge which got rid of the naked edge, but made the ring a little oblong.
