This week, I designed my lamp with the goal of a simple and contemporary style in mind. I started by creating two curves: A circle and a rectangle. I placed them one on top of the other, with about a foot gap between them, and lofted the curves. The result was a shape that moved from a round base, to a rounded rectangle at the top. I then created a cone shaped hole through the center of the structure that would act as a light well for the lamp and allow light to travel upwards through the lamp and out the upper exterior holes in the waffle structure. Because of its structurally sound form, I named the piece Quoin which is a masonry term that refers to a cornerstone, but also refers to a piece of wood that can be used as a wedge in masonry, which fits the theme of the interlocking wooden pieces that the lamp is made of.
