My design was inspired by my desire to create a functional light source. My form is elongated in order to reduce the volume that the lamp occupies, originally it was going to be thinner, but I had to incease the width in order to make the center hole big enough for a hand to fit through and change the light-bulb.
To model my design I used curves to outline my exterior contours and then created surfaces with the sweep 2 tool. I utilized the pipe-method to create my sections for the laser-cut outlines. The important element of my design is the interaction of the exterior form with the interior empty space. I used straight lines for the exterior and a curved form for the interior, this creates an interesting contrast.
My render materials are wood, glass for the light bulb and plastic for the light-bulb support. I manipulated the wood material to be a darker tone, with a rough texture so that light does not reflect from the sections within the lamp.
