Jon Broadfoot: Week 4 USB

Jon Broadfoot Winter2014 elds205 USB

While creating this USB drive I didn't really get to fancy. I followed the online tutorial and created this USB drive from the reference pictures provided for us. I purposely didn't want to stray from the tutorial because I wanted to see how close I could design this one to the reference photos, and I got pretty close.

I employed a lot of different techniques while I was creating this design. The two major ones being split surface and fillet edge. I started with a simple curve then extruded it into the rectangle shape. Then using the rounded edge rectangle I crated the basic shape of the notch cut outs. Then projected that curve to the rectangle I created. Then did a series of trim and blend surface to crate that shape. I then created the metal tip by making another simple curve and extruding it out wards. Cu out the insides and added the little metal surfacing for looks. The traces the USB logo on the top from the reference picture and extruded it and joined it to the top.

My Material choices are pretty straight forward for this design. I wanted to go with a typical black plastic for the main body. Then added an aluminum material to the tip. Used copper for the surface texture on the inside of the tip. Also made the USB logo red so that it would stick out and be easy to read.
