Samantha Whitmore Winter 2014 ELDS 205 Sunglasses
This was a fun project to work on. Although I was taken back by the fact we had to design someone else's drawings, it was fun figuring out how to put everything together that I've learned thus far in class. I worked from the drawing provided by Kristin Leverette. The basic forming n the feathers came from her ideas, but minor adjustments were needed to be made.
For modeling this design I had used the shapes and curve tool for creating the basic shapes. From there I began to extrude many curves and continue to project the shapes onto them. Using the split and trim tool to subtract any materials that were not necessary. A challenging part for me were the feathers. By using the curve tool for a simple shape and the trim tool to take away bits of it I was able to project that shape onto an extruded curve and offset them to be able to Boolean Difference them into the glasses frame.
The feathers were my main interest, but it was a test trying many materials to figure out what gave the most realistic look for the feathers to appear to be soft, and moving. I used diffuse and dielectric with color changes adding more depth to them. The edges of my frames are made from a cubic glass, and the extension is a carbon fiber. Leaving the frames to be a hard plastic and the screws made of an aluminum.
