My inspiration for these sunglasses came from the organic form of Manta Ray. I wanted to use a natural, organic form that represented elegance and grace and thought that this animal would be a perfect model for making the frame of high end sunglasses. The sweeping flow of the front frame gives a stern but class-full feel and even looking straight into the frames from the outside you can clearly see the silhouette of a Manta Ray.
For this model I began with setting up my ortho sketches and put up basic lines to shape the form. Using curve to view and lofting for the beginning I then went into using offset surfaces, balancing the shape constantly to keep the reminiscence of the graceful sea creature. Making sure the form flowed with out any kinks yet following the complex curves I had laid out in my sketches was BY FAR the hardest and most tedious part. However I believe it was all worth it because I am more than pleased with how the final form came out.
My material choice was high end using mostly black chrome for the arms and majority of the frames. I used a tan-ish lens for the glasses because that's the shade of sunglasses I like to wear. I used rubber for the ear holder and silver for the bottom rim of the frame. Finally topping it off with brass running along the top to give the feel that the top of the manta ray's back is shimmering in the sun.
