Rafael Kader: Week 7 Light Model

In this lamp project I started trying to create a Light Model with a twisted shape that suggests movement. After play experiment different shapes, I found on this one the perfect match between the finesse of smooth curves and the robustness of straight lines. It is called Ciclone lamp because of this parallel, smooth and strong.

Specially in this project, I started with a solid and then I used the command twist to create the shape. After that, using the commands Section and Contours to create the sections and the plugins on Rhino to cut the ribs, the final shape was almost done. Finally, using the make2d command I could print it using laser cut.

For the materials, in Keyshot I chose Oak Wood and Hard Rough Black Plastic. The finish product was made of a sheet of 24"x48" of MDF.

The inspiration for my lamp lies with modern design.  I love sleek, flowing design, so I tried to incorporate that into my lamp.  It is also an iteration of my ring that I had printed.  
I used a very simple method to create the form of the lamp.  I first made a torus, tapered it, and trimmed the bottom of it so it could sit on a table.  I then put a point in the center of the form and radiated the cross sections from that and used the pipe method to get the cutouts.
I rendered it in black plastic because I wanted to see what the finished product would look like.  I love a black and white palette, so other iterations could be white and a transparent acrylic.

My lamp was inspired by symmetrical soda can. The shape was simple enough to be produced using the revolve command. After sketching out the form, I translated it onto Think. 

The basic methods used were Split and Revolve. After creating curves using the intersection command I split those curves and created pipes with a circumference of .15, using cardboard as my material. Cardbboard is strong, cheap form of material.

My color choices were flat since cardboard isn't reflective.

I didn't have any inspiration for my lamp, but I was told that it looks Hawaiian.

I made the solid shape using a pyramid solid and then I trimmed off the top part. I, then, used the section and contour commands to construct the individual pieces. I only put rib cuts in the vertical contours. Lastly, I used the Make2D command to lay all of the pieces flat.


I used MDF woof for my lamp, which is generally a tan-looking color.

For my lamp design I chose to do something sleek, simple, and modern. I wanted to create a design that I would love to have and use in my own home. I decided to name it Pod because the design of it reminds me of the bud of a flower or a seed pod.

In designing my lamp, I started with a root object. I made the root object by creating curves that I lofted and made a hole in it with a solid and boolean difference. I then used the make section command to create curves that I then turned into surface. I also used pipes and split them to create the cut out sections where the lamp pieces would fit together. Finally I extruded all the pieces to the thickness of my MDF board.

In keyshot I chose to use the old wood material because I liked the look of it. I wanted to use a wood material because I laser cut MDF so I wanted it to have a similar look that my actual lamp had.

The concept for this design was to create a lamp design that was modern and simple. This design is intended to create an organized feel within the consumer. This design is also intended to be a simple design so it can properly complement any room. This design is functional, cool and easy to assemble.

To create this design a number of commands were used. First I tried creating a shape and revolving it to use the section and contour commands. This unfortunately gave me much difficulty so I resorted to the good ol ArrayPolar command. I first created the shape for the panel and then used the ArrayPolar command. I also used the tube shape to create the disk like shapes in between the panels. To create the drawings I used the Make2D command and I created the light in Keyshot through using a cylinder shape. 

The materials chosen for this design are wood and glass. I feel these are classic and homey materials that can complement most things. I was inspired by Chinese lanterns when designing this product.

Calvin Mai: Week 7 Nautilus










For my lamp, I was inspired by the nautilus, and a seashell, and tried to combine aspects from both to create my final lamp design. I also wanted to create a economical and small lamp, so this lamp can be cut 4 times from a sheet of 24"x48" material

For my model, I created a base form with curves and then lofted it. After I created my base form, I sectioned it and used the pipe method to create the notches in the sections. After that I used massive unroll script to unroll it out. After I unrolled it, I extruded each of the surfaces to my material thickness.

For my lamp, I chose Red oak, as that would be my ideal material of choice for my lamps, but I used a default lighting environment that I played with the contrast and brightness. For my actual lamp, I used a corrugated cardboard, with the westinghouse light.

Blake Stephenson: Week 7 Willis Tower Lamp



 

     I drew inspiration from the Willis Tower in Chicago and my love of rectilinear figures, however I put my own spin on it.  The front wall leaning outwards is my interpretation of the SkyDeck hanging over the street.  I also just wanted a very straight edged form, because I feel like that is the most modern look and that is a style that I like.

     The commands that I used were very simple.  First, I drew a single curve and then I extruded that curve to create the 3D solid that I used to create the sections.  I also used the Cylinder, BooleanDifference, BooleanUnion, and FilletEdge commands.  Then, to create the individual layers and vertical supports for my lamp I used both the section and contour commands.

     The materials that I used in KeyShot were a Light Oak wood for the sections of the lamp and then a 100W area light.  I increased the scale of the wood to better display that this lamp would be cut out of a large sheet of wood, and then I play around with the lighting to create the desired effect within the lamp.

     The Chryses Lamp is a design that works for any style. The design is divided into six horizontal sections and ten vertical sections. The top of the Chryses Lamp is exactly the same looking as the bottom which gives the lamp a good design balance. It also has legs at the bottom that add extra support to the structure. 

     The vertical pieces were created out of a cylinder. The horizontal pieces were created out of a curve that I drew at the edge of the cylinder and revolved 360 degrees. I then contoured the horizontal pieces to create three flat surfaces for the top and three flat surfaces for the bottom. I sectioned the vertical pieces to create ten flat surfaces. I then later (after flattening the entire image to laser print) extruded all surfaces to create a keyshot friendly rendering.

     I chose a mahogany material for my rendering but chose a simple plywood for my finished laser cut product (I can't afford mahogany). To render the lamp I used rendering in passes. I used a diffuse layer, a beauty layer, a texture/roughness layer, and a simple colored layer to create the final image.
