Grant Hoskins: Week 2 Flashlight

Grant Hoskins Winter 2014 ELDS 205 Flashlight

When I was creating this flashlight case, I wanted the LED flashlight to look like a more traditional one. All that was required in this process was to add a lip on the end. I wanted to keep the design simple yet interesting. I have seen flashlights with holes around the rim of the head before and decided to add holes to my model. I am pleased with how it turned out.

I started my model using cylinders and a truncated cone similar to the flashlight tutorial. After I had the rough shape down I started adding some details. I used a lot of polar arrays and Boolean commands in this model. I also projected a few curves and added a pipe to create ridges on the flashlight. I added a keychain loop on the end of the case. This was done simply by adding a torus, boolean union, and filleting the edges.

I wanted to keep the flashlight mostly metal. I used black brushed metal for the body, aluminum for the notch in the head and the notches right behind the head, a light gold for the grips, and Mold-Tech for the non-slip region on the back of the flashlight. The contrast was brought up very high to bring out a shadow and I rotated the environment until I found a combination that I liked.
