Jace McDill Week 3: Hammer



My inspiration for my hammer model came from my father. He has been a carpenter all his life and he makes his living with a hammer. He told me the worst aspect about hammers are the vibrations caused when hammering. To solve this problem i incorporated a rubber bushing between the hammer head and the inner carbon fiber shaft to reduce the vibrations. The rubber is tire grade so it is still gives the hammering power with a fraction of the vibrations, and the carbon fiber shaft is light and rigid which gives better control of the hammer.

The main commands i used while modeling were the fillet, Sweep2 and boolean difference commands. I started by drawing curves that were appealing and then i composed the shapes my using extrudecrv and sweep2. I added details by drawing lines, projecting, boolean differencing, and filleting.

The material reflect the idea of my design. The head is obviously steel. The shaft right below the head is the black rubber the acts as a bushing. I incorporated a carbon fiber support piece between the shaft and the grip to show that carbon fiber is within the rubber shaft. Finally i used colored soft touch materials for the grip with yellow as the accent because it is easily visible.
