Marcus Van Gorden- Thumb Drive

For this project I wanted to make a USB drive that was not only small, but also had added security against unauthorized access in case it is lost because I am always losing mine. To solve this issue I put a Small fingerprint scanner on the back of the drive that only allows authorized users to access the files on the drive. It can also act as a fingerprint scanner for the web browser so one could log into websites with a fingerprint swipe and not a password.

I decided to make my drive small because I prefer a drive that can fit onto a key-chain without making my pockets huge. I added a rubberized grip to it to protect it from the keys that always seem to destroy my flash drives that I don't lose. I also added a visual indicator of the drive's state with a red./green light that turns green in the scanner and fingerprint detail when an authorized fingerprint is swiped. I did this by first taking a reference image of a fingerprint using illustrator. Next I imported it to my rhino file and then projected the curves, split and offset the surfaces.

For rendering I added gold contacts and did it in several passes to try and make the metal appear more shiny.
