Tyler Parton / ELDS 205/ Spirit of St. Patricks Kite / Winter 2014

One of the most fun finals I have had the pleasure of participating in. I created my delta kite from  stipple pattern of mash of symbolic elements. I printed the 7'x4' kite on four different sheet of plotter paper and combined the prints together to achieve my full design. I wrapped the edges with clear packaging tape to increase their stability and durability. I used 3/8 hardwood dowel rods and clear plastic tubing as my couplings, provide by Professor Scott. The total build only took about 4 hours from creating the desgin to taping the images together and adhering the dowels.
The day of testing on Tybee Island turned out to be very windy and test the structural integrity of all of our kites. My center bar lasted only a few minutes before becoming untapped at vertex of delta kite. The plotter paper held up really well and even took the brunt of a few dives out of the sky without tearing. The packaging tape gave me the support I needed but started to come undone when sand started making its way into the adhesive. The kite lasted for approximately 30 min before the keel came unattached due to the sand working under the tape. The product was a cheap and good looking kite that provide a lot of entertainment; great project.

Thank you.
