Nico DeLuca-Verley: Week 7 Dubai Lamp

 Ghosted and Parent Shape
 Material Selection

Light On

The inspiration for my lamp came from a building in Dubai, Saudi Arabia. The building is called the Burj Al Arab and is a hotel that is on its own island a couple hundred feet from shore. It was originally designed to resemble the abstract shape a sailboat makes when fully rigged. This lamp represents that same idea and has a rounded base and tall sides. The building has a large steel part that rises as a mast up the middle of the building but I have chosen to use a flat plane to do this same action. A flat plane cuts the rounded object up to the top of the piece. The lamp has a rounded shape cut out of the center so that the bulb is easily accessible.

The actions I used to create parent shape were mainly curve, loft, booleandifference, split, and trim. To make the horizontal cross sections I used the contour action and started half an inch from the bottom and went all the way to the top in two and a half in increments. For the vertical sections I used the section command to create 8 different cross sections of the lamp that were organized in a compass rose fashion. Then I used the script to create the individual cross sections of the lamp two dimensionally. Finally I took the horizontal section that I wanted the light to connect to and created the one inch hole that it would fit the light.

The materials I used were a walnut for the vertical sections and an ash for the horizontal sections. For the light bulb I used a glass for the outer glass, a light material for the light, and metal for its fittings. Finally, I used a plastic for the chord.
