Mike Byrd, Week 7, Lamp Model
This model was inspired by red king crab as seen on the television show Deadliest Catch. The vertical shape, in this case the legs of the crab were drawn and then polar arrayed around the center. The body of the crab was sectioned out of the various heights of the legs. All surfaces are joined with half lap joints. The design was then exploded in top view and all parts were placed strategically on a 48"x24"x3/16" plywood to yield the maximum amount of usable material and increase the scale.
I am particularly fond of the show Deadliest Catch because of all the steel work that the vessels are created from. The legs of the crab are reflect steel I-beams, a common material large scale construction operations.
