Jon Broadfoot Winter2014 ELDS 205 Duck
For my duck project I wasn't totally sure what product to turn it into right away. I knew that I wanted to turn it into some sort of toy but wasn't sure what. I did a lot of Google searching of kids toys and what kinds of thing they play with. I figured sense ducks swim all the time to make it into a water toy. I decided to add water wheels to it so that it could swim on its own. I added the top handle to it because you are supposed to be able to wind it up and it would be rubber band powered and that is how the water wheels would turn.
To create this duck I used a number of different molding techniques. I started out by using two spheres and manipulating them by pulling on their control points. When I had it in the shape I wanted I then used the blend surface command to add the neck. I continued on and used the orient on surface tool to crate the eyes. once to overall duck was done I then used the Boolean difference command and the polar array too to make the water wheels and the top handle on the duck.
When I dropped this design into Keyshot I decided to go with the plastic materials. Sense I am making this into a kids toy I chose bright, happy colors so it would make playing with this toy more enjoyable. I also chose plastic as my material because this product could easily be mass produced by either rapid prototyping or injection molding.
