Tyler Parton/ Winter 2014/ Flashlight - Bottom view
I wanted to create a more whimsical flashlight. I took stylistic influence from art nouveau. I created the branch like shapes with a variable pipe command. I used a 2 rail sweep to create the shapes in the middle joined with a boolean subtraction.
I wanted the branches to be white to reflect my stylistic choice. I used accent copper on the fillets to make the form pop. I used a soft touch material for the grip and a golf ball impression to increase its touch point impact.
I found the colors on under a "Hot Hues" file. The base in cherry red which complements the pale grip structure. I tried to create a skull to be adding in the arches but it may be easier to accomplish with a sculpted 3-D scan.
Thank you.
The support material that showed through in dimmer slice (second down in middle) showed that my tolerance was large enough to ensure that they would be printed as two separate parts in one file. The cap I printed in a second file needed larger threading to be usable in the final model. In the first model the tolerance was too little so the cap fused to the flashlight body. The proper tolerance to achieve separation of parts was between .02 and .04, .02 worked only if the when the part was printed the and the layer path was long enough to ensure that the joints cooled before the next layer of plastic was applied to the model.
