Jon Broadfoot: Week 2 Flashlight

Jon Broadfoot Winter 2014 ELDS205 Flashlight

When designing my flashlight I really took into consideration that it was going to be rapid prototyped when it was done. This influence the design by not having a ridiculous amount of overhangs, and I made sure to fillet all of my corners. As for the aesthetic part of my design I was really just playing around in Rhino and getting to know what it can do better. I had a lot of fun designing this flashlight sleeve and I think it is going to turn out pretty cool.
While designing this sleeve I employed a wide range of different techniques. I started out with a single closed curve that I used the curve Boolean command and the fillet command to get the basic shape of my flashlight sleeve. From there I used the revolve command and brought it around 360 degrees to make it a solid. After that I went in and drew a few curves and projected them onto my cylinder using the project command. When that was complete I made a pipe around those projected curves and copy and pasted them, then either Boolean differences, or Boolean Union them depending on what feel I was going for.
As for my choice in materials I decided to go with plastic again in Keyshot. I chose to do a black plastic because that is the color I would like it to be after it is rapid prototyped. This kind of material also gave me the ability to see the curves and shadows in the design really well when it got rendered out.
