Sean Carl: Week 2 Duck Project

I went with the concept of a pin cushion, or thumb tack holder resembling a duck. This product would typically be used in an office setting or just to have around the house. My concept plays with the cartoon inspired concept of Xs for eyes which implies that the duck has been poked to death. A pin cushion is just a fun knick knack to own.

The main body was sculpted by manipulating the points from primitive spheres. A stereotypical cartoon looking duck was created with an exaggerated head and tail. I created the pin cushion shape from an extruded curve and piped the same curve later on for the rim. Some of the finer details like the pattern on the back of the head was created from drawing curves and using the split tool to cut shapes.

The main body of the duck is a clear brown glass material. Glass is a bit of a heavy material, so I chose it specifically for a pin cushion to stay stable on top of a desk or counter top. The cushion is blue Velvet and contrasts the yellowy orange beak well.

  1. I tried to resolve the edges but couldn't find a way to.
