Ruan Basson: ELDS 205 Final: Kite






My kite was inspired by the Orca whale.  I felt that since it is going to be a large object in the sky, it could represent a large animal.  I chose the Orca because I like their black and white color.  It was relatively easy to make and I enjoyed making it too.  I would not use packing tape next time, however, because it was not as sticky as I hoped it would be.  I can't wait to make another.  It was also fun to fly it at Tybee.  I was afraid the loose tape would make the whole thing fall apart, but to my surprise, she took right to the sky and stayed there.  At one point near the end of her flight, she came undone, yet she still stayed airborne.  This just goes to show how forgiving the Delta kite design is.  After a quick repair she was up and flying again until I brought her back down to pack up.

Christian Edwards: Week 2 Flashlight








My flashlight was inspired by the idea that through out mans history, fire on a stick (torch)  has led the way through the dark. and how can I make a flashlight that brings back that sense of permittivity without compromising the usefulness of a modern day flashlight.  All of our gadgets now a days are shiny and artificial.  This flashlight will humble who ever holds it. 

To achieve this design in Rhino, I used a few different commands.  Once I had traced the line of what shape I wanted, I used the "revolve" command to bring the line to life in 3d form.  For the LED lights inside, I used arrayPolar to bring a 360 degree of lights.  

The material I ended up using was a wood (Black Walnut).  This will feel so natural to anybody who holds it. It also has a beautiful shine.

    For my flashlight sleeve I just wanted to create a sleek design.  I wanted all of the elements to carve into the form instead of popping out the form.  I also wanted a defined grip that would allow for easy holding of the flashlight sleeve.

     The commands that I used to create this object were ExtrudeCRV, Boolean Difference, Revolve, Fillet, and I created some solids using the solids menu.

     The materials that I put on the object in KeyShot were shiny black plastic for the majority of the sleeve, a turquoise plastic for the spheres on top and a white light for the LED Blubs on the inside of the flashlight.

     The concept of my flashlight is primarily a sleek looking design. I wanted to create an accordion look to the top half of the flashlight to make it seem as if it can be extended. The center-bottom area was left blank in order for the palm of the hand to have a comfortable grasp.

     I used several commands to create this flashlight mainly focusing on rotate, array polar, copy, booleandifference, curveboolean, filletcurve, and filletedge. The entire design was based on the idea of revolving a curve to create a solid object by using the command revolve.

     To finalize my design in keyshot I used three materials. The first material is a chrome black for the sleeve of the flashlight to create a stainless steel look and feel. The second material is a metallic paint in the color deep red for the bottom detail. The third material is also a metallic paint in the color light olive for the circle detail.

My initial design inspiration came from the robots mainly from the movie IRobot with Will Smith. A lot of the new robots had see through material so I incorporated that into the design. The end of the the flashlight was inspired by the fictional character Thor and his hammer. I wanted to created something nice to touch so I added grips to two sides. I also added a button to turn on the light. Adding too much grip wouldn't allow for the user to really feel the texture of the material. That would be a very important feature for me.

The modeling techniques that really helped me were BooleanDifference and CurveDifference. These two techniques allowed me to create a smooth distinct surface. I used Fillet for the sides. Most of my modeling was done in the beginning were I chose where my curves would be. By doing so I was able to get those clean, thin cuts for the middle grip.

My choice of material was also inspired by the movie. I chose a clear rough plastic acrylic. Choosing a clear plastic created a much more interesting render because it was reflective and shiny. I also chose a darker clear shiny plastic for the buttons. The wires at the end are jet black metal. I brought up the lighting and contrast a bit to bring out my render as well.
