Mia Riefkohl: Week 9 Floyd Lamp



Floyd Lamp

       For this assignment, I started sketching the basic shape I wanted for the vertical surfaces. I knew I wanted to create a lamp that was organic shaped, free-formed and that looked like it was floating. I was very aware about both the outside and inside contours because I wanted them to compliment each other. 

    When modeling this design, I followed the tutorials online. I started with the curve tool to create the basic shape of the verticals. Then I used that curve and revolved it to create a solid. With that solid, I used the Contour command to create 11 sections or vertical waffles. After that, I used the Section command to make the horizontal sections or waffles. The horizontal section were particularly challenging, only because I wanted only three in exact positions. Once I figured that out, I used the Surface Planar Curve command to make those curves into surfaces. With those surfaces, I looked for the intersecting curves to create pipes on each of those intersections. Those .19 diameter pipes where then split from the vertical surfaces. I deleted what was left. Finally, I drew a 48x25 rectangle and unrolled all the surfaces onto the rectangle.

    Rendering the model on KeyShot was the funnest part. I chose the wood material for the vertical sections and a clear plastic for the horizontal sections. I knew I wanted wood as the material to compliment the free-formed, organic shape. Also, it was important for me that the horizontal sections would not drag attention from the vertical shape, especially the inside contour. A clear plastic was definitely the perfect choice; it looks elegant and does not take away attention from the rest of the design.


Chia Yu Lu Week8: Light model








In this project I got my inspiration for my light model form the look of the cannon. I search lots of images of cannon on the google, and I finally I come to a universal look of it and use it as the shape for my project. The light ball in the cannon is represents the cannon bullet and it is defined by its shape as well.
                It starts with a curve and I revolve it to make the barrel, and then I rotate it to 90 degree. I use some sample shape to form up the bases of the cannon. I join the two parts together by Boolean union. With the basic shape done I use the command section to draw all the different curves and planar curve it to make it the plan. After that I uses “CutMyOwnRibs” command to make the joining parts between the planes. I uses “BetterMassiveUnroll” to place it on the ground and clean up the edges. In the end I put the curves in to different layers Magenta for exterior cut, Blue is for interior cut, and Red for engraving.
                With rendering I use Fine grain polished wood #1 and Light Oak to make the value contrast. I also change the brightness of the environment between the two images that the one has light on and the other has it off.  






Gianni Yarto: Week 8 Lamp





          My inspiration was drawn mostly from Professor Scotts Organic modeling demo. I really like the way taller peaks combined with radial contour created overhanging shapes. I went with a radial cross-contour because I though it added a lot to the form and gave certain parts a feeling of weightlessness.

          To create the lamp I drew and revolved and organic polycurve. I then used two polylines and the ArrayPolar command to make the vertical Contours. After cleaning up both the vertical and horizontal curves I use the extrude curves command to give them thickness. 

           My material choice was as close to my actually Sandlwood that I purchased. I chose to use the soft maple wood and adjusted the roughness a little. I used two different lighting environments and then render in passes using the diffuse and toon materials.



Ryan Quinn: Week 8 Lamp



   This lamp is very different from the concept I posted originally.  That lamp had a strong horizontal emphasis.  After looking at that horizontal lamp, i decided I wanted a vertical composition, with a clean curve on the back, like a puff of air, or the water that surrounds the top of a sharks fin before the surface tension breaks. 
   I created or organic shape originally from altering a sphere, then differencing out the center, which is wider along the top of the lamp.  Top make the sections so that it could be laser cut and put together I used the waffling with pipes method, after the grasshopper script failed to work.
  The material for the lamp is wood.  The horizontal sections are herringbone, altered a bit in contrast, brightness and scale.  The vertical sections are made from mahogany.  I liked the red verses the brown/grey.  Hopefully my real lamp can look the same.

Grant Hoskins: Week 7 Lamp




     I wanted to keep this lamp very simple. The lamp will be going in my room so I designed it in a way that fits with my setup and goes with other things in my room. The fact that this is going to wood is perfect seeing as my room has a very rustic feel about it. I am happy with the way my lamp turned out.

     I used a slightly different technique than we were taught in class to model my lamp. I started at the curve level. Once I had shapes that I thought went well, I hit them with a quick extrude and polar array. Instead of using the pipe method, I duplicated my objects and ran a boolean difference. This method was easier for me with the pieces that I had to work with.

     I used very simple materials in Keyshot. The majority of the lamp is an ash. I assigned a dark wood to the edges in an attempt at simulating the burned look you get from the laser cutter. For the Light I assigned a 100W area light. I really like the way this lamp looks with a light inside of it and I am excited to get it cut out and assembled.

Samantha Whitmore: Week 8 Lamp




Samantha Whitmore Winter ELDS 205 Lamp 

For the concept of my lamp idea I wanted to make something that was very abstract. While watching Professor Scott create an abstract lamp from such a simple shape I wanted to give it a try and see what i could come up with myself. I knew when designing it I wanted a lot of light to be able to be shinned through and so I have few cuts with large gaps.

I started with creating two sphere shapes and using the control points to shift them around the space till they made a funky type shape. I continued to boolean union them together, while also boolean union differencing the cylinder in the center. I also added in two smaller spheres to cut out from the center making for more empty circles. I used the intersect tool and copied my cylinder cutting object to them to create the cuts and finished by extruding the surfaces of the pieces.

My material was left at a natural wood color to be able to reflect to my finished lamp design. On the horizontal pieces I used wood planks giving it that grainy look, but also keeping a dark shade to it. Then the vertical cut pieces are a cherry wood. Which also have a grainy look to it but still differentiating from the horizontal pieces. 




Julia Ponce: Week 9 Lamp







 
When designing my lamp, M-TAL 1.0, I thought about what design will fit perfectly in a bed-sitter where there is not much space, but there is need of light source. The design a rounded asymmetrical shape to keep it more interesting and aesthetic.
When designing my lamp I first used curve revolve to create the main shape of the lamp. From there I sectioned seven curves horizontally and six curves vertically. I utilize the pipe method to create the section for the laser-cut pieces. For giving the design a material I extrude surface to give it dimension and volume.
 When choosing my materials in Keyshot, I went with a single wood Ash. I decided to go with that because for the final and printed lamp I’m using a single wood for the entire lamp and the wood it’s really light. For the environment I went with a dark studio, for the lamp not only to be the central point but the main point. 

More than a lamp.




Brendan Faulkner week 8: A Lamp

The lamp project this week was quite difficult. I tried 7 different concepts and got my final here. The proses in which I took to design this lamp was very long and tedious, but I got it dun and laser printed out. The shape I used was me playing with the line tool and figuring that the lamp I chose was a nice shape simple but difficult enough for me to feel good and exited about the end product.

My lamp could be a great center peace used in hotels, 5 star restaurants, and modern homes. The lamp is a lamp that is easy to move around, can be placed any were that is dark with an out lit near by. Over all this lamp is a nice peace stained in a dark mahogany stain that ketches your eyes when passing .

 I had to upload the commands make Spine and Pipe for the way I did at first messed my first lamp up, in which I would half to restart again. Once I figured out what I had to do The rest of the process was fast and easy.





Crysta Polvinale Week 8 Lamp





This lamp is inspired by the shape of a jelly fish. I wanted to create a relationship between a static form and this very fluid creature. I also thought that the side shape was not interesting enough so I added some running details.
The processes I used included creating a curve, revolving it, and then contouring the solid form for the horizontal pieces. For the vertical, I arrayed polar those sections and made planar surfaces. From there, I projected the details and split the surface.
In keyshot, I used a lighter wood which will be closer to the material I am using for the laser cutter. I used rendering in passes with a beauty pass, occlusion, and toon for a darker outline. I also adjusted the lighting environment to be darker for the lamp-on view.
