Lily Karatzas: Week 10 Laser Scanning Project


I created this clamp from a blue foam model of the clamp shown above. I used laser scanning and Rapid Works to form my final model and then I imported the mesh into Rhino. In rhino I rebuild the model in scale. I used BooleanDifference to create the shape and made a threaded handle with a pipe and BooleanUnion. In Keyshot, I used steel for the threaded part and an anodized red metal for the grip to attempt to closely imitate the real clamp. Lastly, I adjusted my lighting down a little bit for added shadows and contrast and rendered.

 For my scanned object, I worked with Christian McKenzie. For our model we used a vinyl toy that Christian had, minus the head. After scanning the object, it took several families and patches to align and fuse in order to achieve the mesh I exported into rapidworks. In rapid works I ran a repair wizard and sanded some rougher patches, then exported the model into rhino. Since the item we used was the body of a doll, I decided the best course of action would be to add a head, but had to make sure I kept it classy, so I added a top hat. In Keyshot, the body of the doll and head are a soft grey plastic, and the eyes and mouth features are a rough black plastic, and to top it off the hat is a black leather with a grey leather accent.

My shoe design was inspired by both the Jordan 7's and simplicity. I wanted to keep the the design flowing yet in the simplest way possible. I added texture to the dark grey leather, I used a Kraken bottle design texture to give them more detail and make you want to look closer. My goal was to capture someones eye and draw them in the more they look at them.

For this design, I wanted to stick to the typical shape of a detergent bottle but (with the help from the tutorial) I also brought some interest to it with the different shapes connecting the different materials. The tools I used most to create to forms were blend, offset, fillet, and also the boolean difference command. I actually really enjoyed making this bottle. The form and blends turned out really nice.

My shoe design was influence by the popular flatform shoe trend. The sole of the sneaker is raised off the ground creating height for the wearer. The theme for the shoe was a tough and strong look. The spikes add to the grungy look.

I use the extract isocurve to build out details and align objects like the spikes. The most difficult to model were the laces.

The materials used complement the tough look using a nylon fabric for the main body. The spikes are painted with metallic paint.

  For this project, I wanted to recreate a pair of Vans that I already own so  could see how realistic I could get them to be. The tools I used most were Offset, Blend Surface, patch, and also the interpolate curves on a surface command. What I really appreciated was the fact that I had to create the form of the shoe last before actually making the shoe. It really helped with finding the right shape and curves for the different areas of the shoe.
I tried my best to find a material that best imitated the thick padded cloth that are used on the actual vans. And also, the sole of the shoe is made from white rubber, while the shoe lace openings are made from titanium. I chose to stick with a gray scale for the colors because it can go with any color clothes that someone is wearing.

My shoe design is inspired from Vans' Canvas Authentic shoe (http://shop.vans.com/catalog/Vans/en_US/style/41$.html). I wanted to create a design that was a little more elegant and formal than the Canvas Authentic, but that could still be worm with casual clothes without looking too fancy.
For modeling, I first created a surface out of a curve network for the shoe last, I also used curve 2 view for those curves. I used surface splitting, projections, piping, surface blending, array curve on surface and several boolean commands.
The main materials of the shoe are leather and rubber. I added some noise (fractal) texture to the leather in order to make it more realistic.

    For my camera, I wanted to do something a little more unusual, something that is not seen much today and somewhat forgotten, I wanted to do a film camera. Not just any film camera though, I wanted to do the "Stocker-shot". This uniquely deigned camera incorporates a stock into the film drum of the main body, this give the individual optimum stability when capturing those classic moments. Being that the camera uses film to create an image, no LCD screen was added, just a view finder and a trigger. The "Stocker-Shot" is always ready to get the best shot, even at a distance.
  For the modeling process, i primarily used the blendsrf command to span the gaps I created with the pipe and split tools. The lens' and their respective housings where created with the revolve tool and the eye-piece was done with the Crv2view command. This project made me realize the versatility and effectiveness of the blendsrf command, I found that creating one inherent solid was much easier and came out much cleaner, due to this process.
  In Keyshot rendering, I decided that a black leather surface with polished aluminum accents would give this camera a more "vintage" feel, the focusing wheels are a hard plastic, while the casing of the lens is a rough aluminum painted black.
