Reed Herne: Week 7 Lava Lamp





As the title would indicate, the inspiration for the shape of my lamp was the original lava lamp. The form I used to derive my contours and radial sections is a slightly shorter and wider base than a typical lava lamp. To keep the design off the ground I allowed four of my radial sections to extend past the bottom contour; however, the lamp can also sit on lower by removing the extended sections. Along with the extended legs I also moved the hole for the light bulb up tot he second to last contour section, keeping the light away from the ground and making for an easier removal of the bulb.

In building the form of the lamp I used the draw curve and revolve tools as well as create cylinder and fillet edge. To cut my cross sections I used the contour, bounding box and section commands. Once I had my cross sections I measured my materials before using Prof. Scott's workflow tutorials to create intersection pipes and split my surfaces to create half lap joints. With my lap joints cut I proceeded to use the massive unroll script to layout my sections and color code them for laser cutting.

In Keyshot I did my best to emulate the color of the wood I used to cut my cross sections. I added an area light to the bulb and an aluminum to the bulb screw for authenticity. By lowering the brightness and raising the contrast of the environment I was able to create a nice shot of my lamp lit up.

Reed Herne: Week 6 Varsity Ring




 Inspired by the game of lacrosse given to us by the creator, the varsity ring can serve as a trophy, award or accessory. This piece of memorabilia can be customized to your team colors for personalization. Simple yet elegant the Varsity ring is a wearable reminder of wearer's experiences with their team playing the great sport.

In modeling the head of the stick I used the draw curve command as well as sweep1. For the shaft of the stick I used the helix command to create the initial curve, then a sweep1 command to create the shape. The butt of the stick was modeled using the tapered cylinder and the cylinder commands. To refine my model I used the boolean union and fillet command, creating one unified model and softening edges. 

The passes I used for my first keyshot image are as follows: flat colors, ambient occlusion, reflection and wireframe (with layer mask). For my second image I used the same passes with the exception of the wierframe pass which I replaced with a transparency mask (xray). To create my ambient occlusion pass I painted the ring white, set the material to diffuse and removed ground reflections and shadows. In Rhino I used the make2d command to create isometric and orthographic views of my design. After cleaning up my views in rhino I exported the line drawings to illustrator and from there I pasted them to my photoshop file.

Reed Herne Week 5: Sunglasses (Storm Goggles)




When I first approached this project I was compelled by the idea of making glasses modeled after ski goggles.  The Storm Goggles are sleek shades that are both comfortable and protective. A wide lens allows for greater visibility as well as protection from the elements. Keeping with their name the Storm Goggles are designed to protect the active consumer from any natural deterrents of their outdoor activities.

For this project the main tools I used were "curve from two views" and "sweep2". I also made use of mirror, extrude, project, trim, fillet edge, join edge, cap planar holes and boolean union. Using the bitmaps from the picture frame command I was able to easily draw the curves necessary for my design. However, once my initial curves were drawn I had no use for the reference images. 

For the materials of this design I chose a mostly black color scheme to reinforce the mentality of durability and protection. I accented the goggles with Yellow, a color usually associated with warning or caution. The lightning bolt logo on the side was made a darker orange to contrast with the other materials while remaining a color associated with danger.

Reed Herne: Week 4 Detergent Bottle






In designing this project my goal was to create a slightly refined design that did not stray far from the typical consumer detergent bottle that might be found on the shelf at a store. I extended the bottle with an extra chamber extruding from the top and an elongated tip for facilitate pouring. The cap has ridged along the sides allowing grip so that the cap can be easily twisted off if too tight. 

For the basic shape of the bottle I used a sweep 2 command and planar curves for the ends. To create the depression on the bottom surface of the bottle I used the split, scale and loft tools. For the handle I used primarily the extrude curve and fillet tools. Along with the fillet tool I also used the create pipe command to create smooth transitions between surfaces. As for the cap and tip I used the helix, sweep 1 and boolean union commands. To give my bottle structure I used the offset surface command; creating the walls of the form. I found that the DIR (direction) command was practical when troubleshooting boolean operations. 

My material choices were typical much like the shape of my bottle. I chose plastics for cost efficiency since detergent bottles are mass produced, and the colors of the Tide brand bottle because it is easier for the consumer to identify a product they are already familiar with. The transparent cap allows for easier analysis when grading.

Reed Herne: Week 1 Castle

My intend for this project was to build a castle in order to grasp the basic concepts of working with the Rhino software. While designing this model I was inspired by modern-style seaside homes. I chose to model my castle based on these homes because of their linear and geometric simplicity; ideal attributes for my first project using Rhino. Due to this influence my castle is built out of basic linear shapes with only one curvilinear aspect throughout the model.

Modeling techniques I implemented for this project include, solid creation, explode, join, scale, boolean difference/union, trim, planar surface, curve, extrude curve/surface. In order to create the objects necessary for my design the create solid and extrude curve tools were my primary techniques. However, at times it was more practical to use the boolean difference tool as a subtractive method to create desired objects. In my process I discovered that oddly shaped objects could be easily mapped out using the curve tool and then extruded.

In keeping with the coastal castle theme, I wanted the castle to reflect the seaside environment. Stone materials such as travertine and marble reflect the rock and sand of the beach while the blue curved glass reflects the surface of the ocean. The majority of the structure is surfaced with white plastic providing a neutral background while the secondary material, marble, adds variety and another wave type texture.
