Ruan Basson: Week 8 Lamp - OVO

The inspiration for my lamp lies with modern design.  I love sleek, flowing design, so I tried to incorporate that into my lamp.  It is also an iteration of my ring that I had printed.  
I used a very simple method to create the form of the lamp.  I first made a torus, tapered it, and trimmed the bottom of it so it could sit on a table.  I then put a point in the center of the form and radiated the cross sections from that and used the pipe method to get the cutouts.
I rendered it in black plastic because I wanted to see what the finished product would look like.  I love a black and white palette, so other iterations could be white and a transparent acrylic.

Blake Stephenson: Week 7 Willis Tower Lamp



 

     I drew inspiration from the Willis Tower in Chicago and my love of rectilinear figures, however I put my own spin on it.  The front wall leaning outwards is my interpretation of the SkyDeck hanging over the street.  I also just wanted a very straight edged form, because I feel like that is the most modern look and that is a style that I like.

     The commands that I used were very simple.  First, I drew a single curve and then I extruded that curve to create the 3D solid that I used to create the sections.  I also used the Cylinder, BooleanDifference, BooleanUnion, and FilletEdge commands.  Then, to create the individual layers and vertical supports for my lamp I used both the section and contour commands.

     The materials that I used in KeyShot were a Light Oak wood for the sections of the lamp and then a 100W area light.  I increased the scale of the wood to better display that this lamp would be cut out of a large sheet of wood, and then I play around with the lighting to create the desired effect within the lamp.

Reed Herne: Week 7 Lava Lamp





As the title would indicate, the inspiration for the shape of my lamp was the original lava lamp. The form I used to derive my contours and radial sections is a slightly shorter and wider base than a typical lava lamp. To keep the design off the ground I allowed four of my radial sections to extend past the bottom contour; however, the lamp can also sit on lower by removing the extended sections. Along with the extended legs I also moved the hole for the light bulb up tot he second to last contour section, keeping the light away from the ground and making for an easier removal of the bulb.

In building the form of the lamp I used the draw curve and revolve tools as well as create cylinder and fillet edge. To cut my cross sections I used the contour, bounding box and section commands. Once I had my cross sections I measured my materials before using Prof. Scott's workflow tutorials to create intersection pipes and split my surfaces to create half lap joints. With my lap joints cut I proceeded to use the massive unroll script to layout my sections and color code them for laser cutting.

In Keyshot I did my best to emulate the color of the wood I used to cut my cross sections. I added an area light to the bulb and an aluminum to the bulb screw for authenticity. By lowering the brightness and raising the contrast of the environment I was able to create a nice shot of my lamp lit up.

Nick Tourville- Week 7 Lamp



   As can be assumed from the title, my lamp was inspired by a comet shooting crashing the atmosphere. I created a bulbous bottom and extended, pointed tips and added a tilt to really emphasize this inspiration. There's a higher concentration of contour pieces towards the bottom to to block out light towards the actual "comet" of the lamp, leaving the "tail" to be the more greatly lit up area.
    During the modeling process, I mostly followed the instructed steps of contouring and sectioning my basic shape, piping my intersections, and splitting the pipes and sections and contours. However, I used control point to give extra shape to my sections and, after tilting my entire form using the gumball, used a straight line to trim my form to create a flat bottom. The lasercutting layout was created using the BetterMassiveUnroll script, and thanks to some early scaling, there were no problems getting the parts to fit in a 48x24in box. After all my piping was complete, I extruded my contour and section surfaced from both sides to ensure a uniform look for the Keyshot model. I also added a wire and bulb for the Keyshot model.
    I chose a smooth Oak material for the contours of the lamp. The sections are a Red Oak to represent the fiery tail of the comet. The actual lasercut lamp will be made of a red-tinted plywood. I chose a warm lighting to compliment my woods for the lit keyshot image, and the wire is a soft plastic.

Eris Muller: Week 7 Ciya Lamp




                The lamp that I created shows an elegance in the tower feature of how the points rise up to the top and the wide base drawing your eye up. After developing many different designs I decided it would be best to go with the simpler one.
                The materials I choose were dark wood because it thought it was successful in making the lamp seem professional. The light bulb base is made of aluminum to reflect the light and further making the light more illuminated. There are tiny fillets on all of the edges to enhance the 3D feature.
                I used the mirror tool the most to mirror the pipes and the planes. As most students did, I used contour and sections to make the planar curves. Lastly I used the tool cap to make the planes into 3D objects.

For my lamp design I wanted to create a circular lamp hence the name "Glowbe." The lamp is not huge and is designed to sit on a small table next to a chair. The lamp features three legs to support its self because I did not want the lamp to look very clunky. To create this lamp I started off with a basic form that I created by revolving a closed planar curve. I used the contour and section command to create the individual pieces that fit together. To create the notches I used the pipe tool to form a shape that I used to split the contours and sections. Then I used the MassiveUnroll script to lay out all the pieces on a flat board to be lazer cut. For my choice of materials I wanted to stay true to what the actual lamp will be. I used light oak for the body and glass for the bulb. The lighting is a combination of a customized hdr background as well as using the area diffuse light to cast the light onto the ground.

Karla Ronaszegi: week 7 Sunglasses

I made a pair of wooden Wayfares! I used inspiration from my own sunglasses. I drew out the glasses in rhino and then extruded them. I had a hard time filleting the edges I kept getting small points that would become empty after wards. I used the Mirror as well to get every even and parallel.

Vitaliy Pankov: Week 7 Sunglasses

When I first started working on this project, my initial design was completely different. It seemed somewhat sloppy and amateur to me, so I decided to revise it completely. After producing several different design variations, I picked a photo of a male model off the internet, imported it into Photoshop and sketched a few more ideas. Out of those I then picked my final design. I sketched all three orthographic views in Photoshop and then, using "Path" tool, created clean and smooth curves on top of my original drawing. That helped me achieve clean working environment in Rhino afterwards. As you can see on the renderings, the sunglasses have the logo of my initials engraved on the sides. I came up with this logo a few years back and thought it would be great to use it in this project. I would not consider my sunglasses "aviator" style even though they do bear certain resemblance. Instead, the shape is inspired by the wings of a butterfly.
