Isaac Toonkel Jay Jones: Week 10 3D Scan

For the 3D scan project, Jay and I created a salt or pepper shaker. We modeled the form out of blue foam. After creating the form we scanned it into the computer using Scan Studio. After aligning the pictures of the object, we cleaned up excess parts that were scanned and then saved the scan as a .stl. After opening it in rhino, we had to pull curves from the object in order to make a smooth surface for rendering. The materials we used in Key Shot are cubed glass to give the bottle texture, an aluminum cap, and we projected a label of pepper onto the inside surface.

Isaac Toonkel: Week 10 Shoe

For my shoe design I created a ski boot. I wanted to create a ski boot because I ski and am looking forward to it over the holiday break. The boots feature an easy to close buckle that secures your foot in the boot. The inside has a soft, warm padding to keep your toes warm and reduce blisters. The toe area features a large toe lug that insures a secure connection to your skis. Near the ankle is a pivot point for when you aren't skiing so it can be unlocked for easier walking. 

The boots are made from a variety of materials. The upper cuff, and front toe plate are made from a blue carbon fiber so strength isn't substituted for weight. The main body of the boot is made of high strength plastic. The inner lining of the boot is a soft synthetic material and the straps are mad of nylon. The buckles are made of anodized aluminum.

To create the model, I created a boot last using curves and the network surface command. After completing a basic form, I used the project command to add shapes to the surface, then offset the surfaces to create raised shapes. To create the straps and the inner soul of the boot I used the sweep 1 command to create a surface along a curve. For the lighting in keyshot I used a custom HDR setting that has worked well for me before. For rendering, I rendered in passes and altered how they meshed with each other in Photoshop.

Instead of taking inspiration from form, I took inspiration from the mechanical components of a car for this chair. My goal for this design was to create a rocking chair without rockers. The way this works is that there is a large hinge in the front of the chair that lets the seat move up and down. The spring in the back, meant to look like coil over suspension, keeps the seat upright and lets you rock back and forth. Since this type of suspension is usually found on race cars, I designed the seat similar to a racing bucket seat.
This tubular chair was created using a variety of command such as the pipe command, trim command, wire cut command, helix curve command, and most importantly, the fillet edge command. To create good welds between pipes, i filleted the edge. When this did not work I used the pipe-trim-blend technique. 
Because this chair is styled after car components, the frame of it is made of aluminum which is a common material found in cars. The support of the seat is made from a nylon material similar to that found in the window nets used in nascar. The head rest is made of a black leather. For lighting I used the HDR settings I have used in prior projects due to its ability to create good shadows and adds more depth.

Isaac Toonkel: Week 7 Lamp

For my lamp design I wanted to create a circular lamp hence the name "Glowbe." The lamp is not huge and is designed to sit on a small table next to a chair. The lamp features three legs to support its self because I did not want the lamp to look very clunky. To create this lamp I started off with a basic form that I created by revolving a closed planar curve. I used the contour and section command to create the individual pieces that fit together. To create the notches I used the pipe tool to form a shape that I used to split the contours and sections. Then I used the MassiveUnroll script to lay out all the pieces on a flat board to be lazer cut. For my choice of materials I wanted to stay true to what the actual lamp will be. I used light oak for the body and glass for the bulb. The lighting is a combination of a customized hdr background as well as using the area diffuse light to cast the light onto the ground.

The "Mountain View" Sun Glasses are a pair of shades designed for those who seek a rugged and adventure filled life style. These glasses are designed to be more durable than your average glasses while maintaing a sleek design. An important feature of these glasses is the round lenses which rap around the frame to provide a maximum field of view. The frame is made of strong plastic and the lenses provide 100% UV protection. To create these glasses, I used the sweep 2 command, loft command, and blend surface command to create the form from my sketches. The lenses are made from patching a planar curve, then moving the control points.

For my detergent bottle, I created a bottle for Oxi Clean. My design features an easy to hold handle and a spout to reduce dripping. The bottle is made of plastic painted different colors. To create this design, I started with 2-dimensional orthographic drawings which I used to create the surface. I used the  offset command to create the indented surfaces. To create the threads on the cap I used the helix command.

For my USB I created, I created one that would light up and glow when put into a computer similar to the one I have now. The USB is made out of a combination of plastic and aluminum. The contact points on the inside of the USB are made of copper. To create this USB flash-drive I primarily used line tools to create form from a background bitmap. Also I used the trim command and offset command frequently.

Isaac Toonkel: Week 3 Mouse







For my mouse design, I wanted to create a sleek mouse. My inspiration came from a mouse made by BMW. I thought the fact the mouse was hollow was interesting but I wanted to show more of the internal circuits because I've always thought they were cool to look at. The materials I used for the mouse are a variety of plastics as well as aluminum because it is light weight. The middle section is made of a clear plastic to let the red light shine through and add to the aesthetics. To create this mouse, I mainly used the loft command and the blend surface command.

Isaac Toonkel: Week 3 Hammer






For my design, I wanted to create a hammer that could be versatile and used in what ever project you needed it for. The claw is similar to one you would find on a rock hammer used for breaking apart rock. The hammer features two nail removers to remove nails from tricky locations. The handle has a small angle in it to increase leverage and make your strikes harder. At the base of the handle is a strong magnet to pick up and dropped nails or metal scraps. The hammer is made of one solid piece of steel to maximize strength. The handle is made of rubber for extra grip and carbon fiber hexagon inserts to add style. To create this hammer I used the loft command to create a smooth transition from the neck to the cheek. I also used the boolean difference command to create the handle.

For my duck inspired product, I created a Duck Decoy that would be used for hunting. I thought of the idea after talking to my Brother who works for a hunting club. The idea behind this design is that the decoy has a speaker in it that makes the duck call opposed to having to blow through a hand held duck call. I created the smooth surfaces by altering the control points of spheres. The decoy is made of plastic and has a hollow section as well as a keel to stay afloat.
